Pittsburgh Immigrants

Here's a good Ron Bennington Line of the Day:

While talking about the upcoming Superbowl, there was a good discussion about the social issues of the actual city.

"With the fall of the steel industry, people were forced to leave the city in search of jobs all over the country. The people from Pittsburgh were like immigrants who had to leave the old country of Pittsburgh and find themselves in these milktoast towns and grab whatever type of meat they can find and put in on a sandwich."

Spaceballs: The Animated Series - First Episode

Description:

Wow. Was this horrible. I remember hearing on G4 when this show was in the works and actually looked forward to it, hoping the best. I never actually saw it air on G4...just the hulu feed right now. I wish I hadn't. The mystique of it's existence prior to me watching was so much better. Judge for yourself. I'll probably try a few more episodes just to see how big a failure Mel Brooks let this thing become.

News: Arrested Development Movie On

Some news today...
Michael Cera will do the highly debated “Arrested Development” movie, according to his on-screen granddad, Jeffrey Tambor.

“If I have to call him up and say, ‘Get on set right now, young man,’ he’ll be there,” the comic said at a recent Upright Citizens Brigade L.A. performance of “Word Girl.” “The movie is going to happen this year, and Michael Cera is on board. Trust me.”

In the meantime, perhaps i'll catch up...

Lost: Clip - Hurley Explains Lost

Description:

I'll be posting a number of quality Nostalgia Critic reviews in the coming month as well as his hilarious 5 Second Movies (which are an entire movie you've seen summed up in 5 seconds). On last weeks Lost episode (E02), the Hurley character describes what happened on the island to his mother, and it immediately reminded me of a 5 Second Movie. Lost has been on for a few years with so many plot turns that there was a comical value in the scene for trying to sum up all the seasons in a minute scene.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

Description:

This isn't just one of my favorite movies about the industry, but a documentary I consider to be one of the best all-around.

From IMDB:
The King of Kong (2007):

In the early 1980s, legendary Billy Mitchell set a Donkey Kong record that stood for almost 25 years. This documentary follows the assault on the record by Steve Wiebe, an earnest teacher from Washington who took up the game while unemployed. The top scores are monitored by a cadre of players and fans associated with Walter Day, an Iowan who runs Funspot, an annual tournament. Wiebe breaks Mitchell's record in public at Funspot, and Mitchell promptly mails a video tape of himself setting a new record. So Wiebe travels to Florida hoping Mitchell will face him for the 2007 Guinness World Records. Will the mind-game-playing Mitchell engage; who will end up holding the record?

This is a more difficult movie to find a stream for, so you'll have to download it.

Rise of the Video Game: Level I, Level II

Description:

I watched these this entire series last week. It's a 5 part series with the first episodes being the most enjoyable since they focus on a historical perspective.

Rating:

LEVEL ONE
Premiere: Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m. ET/PT
In the 1950s, the Cold War quickly evolved between the world superpowers of the United States and the Soviet Union. Mutually assured destruction enforced an uneasy stalemate, yet also drove computer technology to create missile simulations to predict the results of a nuclear war. This same computer technology was used to develop the first computer game in 1958 — Tennis for Two. The Space Race and the Vietnam war coincided with Steve Russell's game Space War! and the emergence of the first true giants in the video game business — Nolan Bushnell and Atari. In post-World War II Japan, electronics and computer technology emerged to rebuild a land and economy devastated by the atomic bomb. Space Invaders and Pac-Man soon followed, and the golden age of video games was born. Among others, individuals featured in this episode include Steve Russell, Nolan Bushnell, Ralph Baer (considered by many to be the inventor of the video game) and Toru Iwatani (Pac-Man designer). Video games emerged as a form of entertainment where the player was in control, as opposed to the more passive diversion of watching television.

LEVEL TWO
Premiere: Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 8 p.m. ET/PT
In the late 1970s and 1980s, instead of controlling "things" like spaceships and tennis rackets, videogame technology let players command recognizable characters with real faces and back stories. Game developers were liberated to create more complex video games with heroic journeys — and Japanese creators like Shigeru Miyamoto rose to prominence with star characters Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda. But in the 1990s, Generation X emerged and the games of their childhood couldn't satisfy the new teen angst that now permeated pop culture. With Sega's Genesis and Sony's PlayStation, gamers dismissed cutesy cartoon characters in favor of grittier heroes like Sonic the Hedgehog and anti-heroes in games like Grand Theft Auto III. As players grew up, their youthful idealism was replaced with a warier view of the world and a yearning for photorealistic, angry anti-heroes. This episode features interviews with Trip Hawkins (Silicon Valley entrepreneur and co-founder of Electronic Arts), Al Lowe (creator of Leisure Suit Larry), Tim Schafer (creator of Full Throttle) and other notable figures in the gaming industry.
