Michael Jackson Died? Small News Compared to Tippy Toms Death

There have been all these articles about how news of Michael Jackson dying slowed down the internet last week...how Twitter and Facebook were offline for some. But according to Google, the biggest of the internet presences, it was another death that was big news. No, not Farrah Fawcett. The #1 Google Trend for most of July 26th was "Tippy Tom died".

Tippy Tom was a homeless man in New York. But his fame is due to his presence on the Opie & Anthony show for the past decade.

Fox News and others noticed the Google Trend and were quick to report on it:

"And in a bizarre coda, the No. 1 Google Trend search term at 3 p.m. EDT Friday was about the death of Tippy Tom, an alcoholic homeless man frequently featured on the "Opie and Anthony" radio show."

Unintended Facebook Sabbatical

So I've been a slacker with Facebook. Since I moved the Facebook app to the 4th screen on my iPhone last year, I never have the need to visit. I have Facebook email notifications shut off, so I rarely have any stimulus to use the app, nor Facebook via the computer. And with Pidgin IM, I have Facebook "chat" online with all the other services...but still no need to login to Facebook.

Thanks to the wonders of Twitterfeed and some other online programs, I have a pretty good setup: my blog posts are pinged to Twitter and then Twitter posts the articles to Facebook (status). When someone replys to a CollegeSportsInfo.com blog post (as a Facebook status update), I get a special notification and an interface to respond to status responses that bypasses Facebook. A ton of people already use services like Twitterfeed for their blog RSS feeds, but not many seem to be using their own programs that allow them to only get Facebook status responses to certain feeds. For some of the high traffic site owners, I recommend taking the time to program one.

So there's my deep dark secret: I don't use Facebook. So now I have over 100 messages to go through. Fun. My apologies for not getting back to you earlier if you sent me a message.

Triumph Of The Nerds

Watch all 3 parts here
...

Description:
Triumph of the Nerds zooms backwards on the information superhighway to show in vivid detail how youthful amateurs, hippies and self-proclaimed "nerds" accidentally changed the world. The three-hour program chronicles the birth and growth of Silicon Valley's personal computer industry.

Triumph of the Nerds features interviews with some of the industry's most recognizable characters, including Microsoft's Bill Gates and Paul Allen, and Apple founder Steve Jobs. For the first time, television tackles the history of this new industry with attention to the culture from which it sprang as well as the culture that it created.

iPhone 3.0 Today

I was hoping to find someone to go to the Apple Store, wear an Apple T-shirt pretending to be an employee and tell people in line that Apple ran out of iPhones and to go home. Those cries of disappointment would make for a great video.

The Harry Potter Plagerism Issue

As I'm a full grown man, I have little knowledge of Harry Potter other than catching parts of the movies on cable or on flights. But the other day, I saw something worth noting about the books/characters.
I came across the cast list for the original Battlestar Gallactica series. I saw there was a kid in the series and wanted to see what became of the actor (since other than Jane Seymour, the only actor I recalled was the guy who played Face on the A-Team). So I clicked on the link of the child actor then, Noah Hathaway, and saw that he was in a movie I remeber as a lil' kid, Troll. What was odd was seeing that the character he played was Harry Potter...and the movie was from 1986.

Huh?

Yeah, Harry Potter was around in 1986. He was a kid who learned about his hidden gift for magic. So I just assumed that the writer of the Harry Potter novels wrote the Troll screenplay. Nope. She just lifted the character form Troll.

Some minor research into other plagerism charges show JK Rowling based the entire series of novels on something that already existed, The Worst Witch, again from 1986.

Well, I gave this person too much credit for building an empire out of an orignal idea. But perhaps if I had more background info on Harry Potter, I wouldn't be learning this now. I'm sure this is common knowledge the fans.
