This is my dog Malia, born June 30, 2008. I adopted her on February 15, 2009 from Much Love Animal Rescue in Santa Monica, CA.
Since then, we’ve lived in 5 countries and visited 80+ countries together.
All the best things in my life started with Malia. She gave me the strength to leave the U.S. in 2010, to Argentina where I had only only conversational Spanish, because I knew I’d never be alone with her there.
She was with me when I met my future wife in 2011, who saw what a loving father I’d be after seeing how I cared for you.
You stood strong when in January 18, 2016, I dropped you off at a dog-sitter for the first time in your life, so that I could be at the hospital for 5 days to help bring Alexander into this world.
You’ve been the best big sister to Alexander, giving up your pack status, and choosing to sleep nightly under Alexander’s crib as a baby.
You gave up the daily 5k jogging we did from Feb. 2009 until Jan. 2016 because you knew Alexander came first.
You gave up your unlimited walks per day and backyard access in Jan. 2018, when we moved back to Chile in an upper floor apartment, when I was a stay-at-home dad and had less time for you because I was caring for Alexander all day.
But most importantly, when we were separated from Alexander on Sep. 11, 2018, you’ve provided me with all the energy to endure.
I’m in this fight for Alexander’s rights to have a father forever, and you might not be a part of it much longer at 15, but I appreciate the effort to remain strong, to be here, so that you can say goodbye to Alexander in person one day.
I love you, Malia. But most of all, thank you for bringing love into my life and making me the loving father I am for Alexander.
